PIPER PLUS

Mitochondrial Diseases and Syndromes are only now beginning to be understood. The effects of a child suffering from one of the many mitochondrial maladies are devastating to the family who lives daily waiting for their child to die.
The United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation (UMDF) is looking for the answers to questions many families with affected children are asking. The website at http://www.umdf.org has detailed information about these diseases and links to numerous other sites that outline additional efforts underway.

Piper Kate Younglove
February 7, 2009 - January 16, 2011

Piper Plus Publications was created in the memory of Piper Kate Younglove, one of my triplet grand-daughters. Piper, a fraternal triplet, and her two twin sisters, Andi Elizabeth and Bella Ryan, were born on February 7, 2009. They were born prematurely because of concerns for their safety as Piper was beginning to occupy most of the space available in their one bedroom efficiency apartment. As a result of this early eviction, Piper weighed only 3 pounds 4 ounces, Andi weighed only 2 pounds 9 ounces and Bella registered a mere 1 pound 11 ounces.

After seven weeks in intensive care and incubators, doctors released Andi and Piper to their parents for the trip home. Bella gained her freedom from her infant prison a week later. Normal development patterns took place with all three girls until the parents noticed that Piper's development seemed to be inhibited. The experts initially attributed it to her prematurity indicating she would soon catch up. Eventually, an MRI was scheduled when experts determined it was safe to do so.

Some months passed before the MRI and other tests finally revealed that Piper suffered from a serious condition known as Leigh's Syndrome or Disease. It is a rare mitochondrial disorder preventing the cell's energy machine from working at full strength and usually leads to death during the first few years of the afflicted child's life.

For nearly two years Piper clung to life with the loving and dedicated care of her parents. However, she required a stomach and lower intestine feeding tube to deal with reflux and swallowing issues and a regimen of medicines for seizure and other medical problems. Her prognosis was poor throughout her short life.

On January 15, 2011, she showed signs of decline. These symptoms increased and by Sunday morning, January 16, 2011, they had become severe. She joined the other angels who were victims of her illness late that afternoon while in her mother's loving arms.

Piper Plus Publications is a full fledged publishing operation and can be anyone's publisher with the assignment of ISBNs, PCNs, and other professional aspects of producing publications. Profits made from the sale of books made available through Piper Plus Publications will be used to help support organizations involved with finding the causes and cures for mitochondrial diseases.

The United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation (UMDF) is a leading organization in the effort to defeat all of the mitochondrial diseases. Its mission is 'To promote research and education for the diagnosis, treatment and cure of mitochondrial disorders and to provide support to affected individuals and families'. I encourage you to visit the UMDF and become familiar with these little known yet devastating diseases.
